Erik ten Hag Appointed as Technical Director at FC Twente; Returns to Childhood Club

Erik ten Hag has been officially appointed as the new technical director of FC Twente, marking an emotional return to the Dutch Eredivisie club where he began both his playing and coaching careers. The announcement was made on January 6, 2026, with the 55-year-old set to join the club on February 1 before officially taking over the technical director role from July 1, 2026.

Appointment Details and Contract

Ten Hag has signed a contract with FC Twente that runs until mid-2028, ensuring a long-term commitment to the club’s football operations. He will succeed Jan Streuer, the 77-year-old current technical director who recently announced his retirement at the end of the 2025-26 season.

The appointment represents a pivot for Ten Hag away from active management following his dismissal by Bayer Leverkusen after just three games in September 2025. FC Twente general manager Dominique Scholten expressed delight at welcoming Ten Hag, stating: “Erik has an incredible track record in football, and his bond with FC Twente has always remained very strong.”

Career Overview and Recent History

Ten Hag’s managerial journey has been marked by significant success, particularly during his Ajax tenure where he won multiple domestic titles and reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019. However, his recent spells at Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen proved more challenging.

Personal Connection and Emotional Return

Ten Hag expressed deep emotion about returning to his childhood club. In his statement, he said: “I think it’s wonderful and special to return to FC Twente, where I’ve been a supporter at Het Diekman since I was a young boy. My football and coaching careers began here.”

Growing up in Haaksbergen, a town bordering Twente’s hometown of Enschede, Ten Hag developed an early connection to the club that has lasted throughout his life. He spent 13 seasons at Twente as a youth and player, later returning for a second playing spell before serving as youth coach, head of academy, and assistant coach.

Role and Responsibilities

Ten Hag will be involved in FC Twente’s footballing activities from February onwards, ensuring a smooth transition and allowing him to assess the club’s current structure before assuming full technical director responsibilities in July.

Strategic Direction and Club Ambitions

Ten Hag’s appointment aligns with FC Twente’s recent strategic initiatives announced by the club. Scholten emphasized: “We are raising the bar and further professionalising the football organisation. Our conversations quickly revealed a strong ambition to further develop FC Twente.”

The 55-year-old is specifically bringing his expertise in youth development, team building, and elite sports culture to strengthen FC Twente’s technical foundation. He aims to support the club in realizing its “potential as a regional flagship” in Dutch football.

Manchester United Connection and Europa League Meeting

Interestingly, while still Manchester United manager, Ten Hag faced Twente in the Europa League during the 2024-25 season. Prior to that encounter, he remarked: “I would have preferred to have played against somebody else. It’s not nice to have to hurt something you love.”

That match ended in a 1-1 draw and proved to be one of Ten Hag’s final games in charge of United before his dismissal in 2024.

Rejected Alternative Opportunities

Following his Bayer Leverkusen departure, Ten Hag received interest from several clubs. Premier League strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers considered him as a potential managerial replacement, while a return to Ajax was also discussed. However, Ten Hag turned down these managerial opportunities in favour of the technical director role at Twente.

Notably, Twente had even considered re-hiring Ten Hag as head coach in September 2025, and those links intensified when he was spotted attending their Eredivisie clash with Ajax in October. However, the technical director position ultimately became the agreed path forward.

Industry Implications and Career Shift

Ten Hag’s move reflects a broader trend in football where seasoned managers transition into technical or sporting director roles. This shift acknowledges that successful coaches can contribute significantly to club structures beyond the touchline, shaping long-term strategy and organizational culture.

His appointment signals FC Twente’s commitment to professionalizing their operations while tapping into decades of top-level football experience at both Ajax and Manchester United.
