‘Sandokan’ Storms Netflix: Can Yaman & Ed Westwick Unite in Epic Pirate Adventure

Turkish heartthrob Can Yaman and Gossip Girl’s Ed Westwick are bringing high-seas drama to your screen this January. Here’s everything you need to know about Netflix’s newest binge-worthy series.

When Can You Watch Sandokan?

Mark your calendars! The eight-episode swashbuckling series Sandokan premieres on Netflix US on Monday, January 19, 2026. After wrapping up its Italian run on Rai 1 just last week, American audiences won’t have to wait long for this international production.

What Makes Sandokan a Must-Watch?

Based on the legendary novels by Emilio Salgari, Sandokan transports viewers to mid-19th century Borneo where pirates battle British colonial forces. The story centers on Sandokan, nicknamed the “Tiger of Malaysia,” who leads a rebel crew against the ruthless British Empire.

But here’s where it gets interesting: when Sandokan meets Marianna, the beautiful daughter of the British consul, their forbidden love affair ignites a war. With legendary pirate hunter Lord James Brooke determined to destroy him, Sandokan must fight for survival, love, and freedom.

• Ed Westwick (Chuck Bass from Gossip Girl) plays the menacing Lord James Brooke
• Alanah Bloor stars as Lady Marianna, the “Pearl of Labuan”
• John Hannah (The Mummy franchise) appears as the Colonel

Why Netflix Bet Big on This Series

With Can Yaman’s massive global social media following (over 10 million Instagram followers) and Ed Westwick’s recognition from Gossip Girl, Netflix clearly sees high binge potential. The show was produced by Lux Vide, the Italian powerhouse behind Netflix hits like Medici and Leonardo.

According to What’s on Netflix, the series modernizes the classic 1976 cult phenomenon for today’s audiences. Showrunner Scott Rosenbaum (The Shield, Chuck) leads the truly international production that filmed throughout 2024.

Season 2 Already Confirmed

Despite initially being labeled a mini-series, Sandokan has already secured approval for a second season, eyeing 2026 production with a 2027 release target. Whether Netflix will remain the streaming home remains to be seen, but the confirmation speaks volumes about the show’s anticipated success.
