APEX: Charlize Theron’s Barefoot Mountain Climb That Will Leave You Breathless

Netflix just dropped exclusive first-look images from APEX, and they reveal something extraordinary: Charlize Theron scaled actual Australian mountains barefoot for this survival thriller. Yes, you read that right—barefoot. Mark your calendars for April 24, 2026, because this promises to be one of the most physically intense films you’ll see all year.

Everything You Need to Know About APEX

The Ultimate Test of Survival

The premise is deceptively simple but terrifying: a grieving woman pushes her limits in the Australian wilderness, only to become prey in a deadly game with a ruthless predator. This isn’t your typical action thriller where fight choreography dominates. Instead, director Baltasar Kormákur focuses on raw endurance and authentic survival.

Theron’s Most Demanding Role Yet

According to exclusive details from People, Theron performed all her own climbing stunts—including barefoot ascents on raw rock faces. The Oscar-winner revealed this was her first real climbing experience beyond childhood tree-climbing in Africa.

“I climb all of the actual mountains in the movie. I’m climbing all of it, and I’m climbing it barefoot on my own raw feet,” Theron explained. The production required daily hikes into remote Australian locations, with Theron also mastering kayaking for numerous sequences.

The actress praised director Kormákur’s uncompromising approach, noting he never takes shortcuts. After 20 years of near-misses, APEX finally united Theron with Eric Bana, who she describes as amazing in the film.

Star-Studded Cast With Chemistry

Fresh from The Old Guard sequel, Theron leads a powerhouse cast. Taron Egerton, recently captivating audiences in Carry-On, brings intensity to the role of Ben. Eric Bana, who appeared in Netflix’s 2025 series UNTAMED, rounds out the trio as Tommy.

This combination of action veterans and proven dramatic actors suggests APEX will deliver both pulse-pounding sequences and emotional depth.

Why This Could Be Netflix’s Biggest 2026 Thriller

Kormákur’s previous work on survival thrillers like Everest demonstrates his ability to capture nature’s brutal beauty while maintaining narrative tension. Combined with Theron’s commitment to authentic stunts and a screenplay that emphasizes psychological warfare over explosions, APEX could redefine the survival thriller genre.

For fans craving intense action reminiscent of Netflix’s hit series like Squid Game, APEX delivers that same life-or-death stakes in a more intimate, visceral package.

The newly released first-look images showcase stunning Australian landscapes and Theron’s physical transformation for the role, hinting at the film’s cinematic scope.
