Kim You Jung just delivered the performance of her career. The psychological thriller Dear X concluded with a finale that defied every K-drama convention—no redemption arcs, no fairytale endings, just raw survival and moral ambiguity. Baek Ah Jin’s journey from abused orphan to calculating sociopath captivated millions, but these final episodes pushed boundaries even veteran drama watchers didn’t expect.

Dear X Finale: Key Moments Breakdown

Shocking Moment	Character(s)	Impact
Psychological Warfare	Baek Ah Jin vs Moon Do Hyuk	Ah Jin loses grip on sanity
Ultimate Sacrifice	Kim Jae Oh	Records own murder to expose villain
Betrayal Documentary	Yoon Jun Seo	Public exposé destroys Ah Jin’s career
Cliff Drive Finale	Ah Jin & Jun Seo	Only one survives the literal fall

When Love Becomes Torture: Do Hyuk’s Mind Games

Moon Do Hyuk (Hong Jong Hyun) isn’t your typical villain—he’s a psychological sadist who weaponizes intimacy. Unsatisfied with merely possessing Baek Ah Jin (Kim You Jung), he systematically dismantles her psyche. By recreating the traumatic scene of her father’s murder, Do Hyuk triggers Ah Jin’s violent instincts, leading her to assault someone publicly and spark nationwide scandal.

The cinematography during Ah Jin’s mental breakdown deserves special recognition. Unstable camera angles, distorted frames, and claustrophobic close-ups mirror her deteriorating state, making viewers feel the suffocating anxiety she experiences. Going from predator to prey, Ah Jin faces psychological torture that makes her previous physical trauma seem manageable. It’s visceral, uncomfortable television—and absolutely brilliant.

Jae Oh’s Heartbreaking Sacrifice

If Dear X has one purely sympathetic character, it’s Kim Jae Oh (Kim Do Hoon). Coming from similar abusive backgrounds, he understands Ah Jin’s trauma better than anyone. When Do Hyuk orders his murder, Jae Oh sets up a hidden camera knowing his death could provide the evidence needed to destroy his killer.

His sacrifice gives Ah Jin leverage against Do Hyuk—but at the devastating cost of her last genuine relationship. Jae Oh’s death is unfair, meaningless, and tragically realistic, reflecting how systems fail people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Kim Do Hoon’s performance in these final scenes is nothing short of extraordinary, making this one of 2025’s most heartbreaking K-drama deaths.

Jun Seo’s Prejudiced Exposé

Yoon Jun Seo (Kim Young Dae) walks the thinnest line in the series—between obsessive protector and vindictive enemy. After taking the fall for Ah Jin countless times, he finally snaps and releases a documentary exposing her as a sociopath. The timing is devastating: just as Ah Jin achieves her first legitimate acting success and feels untouchable, everything collapses.

The documentary is brilliantly prejudiced, showing Ah Jin’s manipulations without context—ignoring the abuse, neglect, and systemic failures that shaped her. Jun Seo’s own trauma clouds his judgment, transforming him from conflicted ally to the story’s true villain. His character becomes so frustrating that his ultimate fate feels almost cathartic. According to Viki’s viewer data, Jun Seo’s betrayal generated the most heated online debates of any 2025 K-drama moment.

The Cliff: Breaking the Final Shackle

The series concludes with poetic brutality. Jun Seo, in a final desperate act, drives himself and Ah Jin off a cliff. Their last conversation perfectly encapsulates their toxic relationship—Ah Jin’s hollow voice and empty eyes versus Jun Seo’s complete despair. Only Ah Jin survives.

Her survival isn’t triumph or redemption—it’s pure, isolated existence. Standing alone at the top she clawed toward her entire life, Ah Jin breaks free from her last emotional shackle. It’s symbolic, dark, and utterly fitting for a character who sacrificed everything, including her humanity, for survival.

The ending deliberately leaves questions unanswered. Does Ah Jin feel remorse? Will she face justice? The ambiguity is the point—Dear X refuses easy answers about morality, trauma, and accountability.

Why Dear X’s Ending Works

Unlike conventional K-dramas that redeem antiheroes or punish them definitively, Dear X presents uncomfortable truth: sometimes damaged people survive through morally gray actions, and the system that created them remains unchanged. Kim You Jung’s nuanced performance prevents Ah Jin from becoming a caricature—she’s simultaneously victim and villain, sympathetic and horrifying.

The series challenges viewers to confront how society treats abuse survivors, particularly women from disadvantaged backgrounds. Ah Jin’s methods are inexcusable, but her trauma is undeniable. That tension makes Dear X one of 2025’s most provocative K-dramas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened to Baek Ah Jin at the end of Dear X?

Baek Ah Jin survives the cliff crash that kills Yoon Jun Seo in the series finale. Rather than receiving redemption or punishment, she stands alone at the metaphorical “top”—successful but completely isolated after losing everyone who genuinely cared for her (Jae Oh died earlier). The ending is deliberately ambiguous, showing Ah Jin breaking free from her final emotional shackle (Jun Seo) but leaving her future uncertain. She survives, but whether that’s a victory or curse remains open to interpretation—a bold narrative choice that sparked intense viewer debates.

Is Dear X worth watching despite the dark themes?

Absolutely, but with content warnings in mind. Dear X isn’t your typical romantic K-drama—it’s a psychological thriller examining trauma, abuse, and survival through morally complex characters. Kim You Jung delivers a career-defining performance as Baek Ah Jin, showcasing incredible range. The cinematography during psychological breakdown scenes is masterful, and the plot consistently subverts K-drama tropes. However, it contains themes of domestic violence, psychological manipulation, murder, and suicide. Viewers seeking comfort viewing should skip this, but those who appreciate dark, thought-provoking narratives will find Dear X one of 2025’s boldest K-dramas.
