How to Reach Ice Belt in Metroid Prime 4 Beyond: Your Complete Access Guide

Stuck at that frozen door blocking your path to Ice Belt in Metroid Prime 4 Beyond? You’re not alone. This icy research facility in the northwest corner of Sol Valley holds crucial upgrades and challenging puzzles, but accessing it requires specific preparation. Here’s your streamlined guide to unlocking this frozen zone and conquering its secrets.

Metroid Prime 4: Ice Belt Quick Reference Guide

Step 1: Obtain the Fire Shot First

Before you can enter Ice Belt, you need the Fire Shot upgrade to melt the frozen entrance door. This requires a detour to Flare Pool, located in the southeast region of Sol Valley near the volcano.

Getting to Flare Pool

After completing Volt Forge and acquiring Vi-O-La (your hoverbike), head southeast toward the massive volcano. Look for two large pillars marking Flare Pool’s entrance. Place your bike in the hologram and rev it up to activate the tunnel entrance.

Obtaining the Fire Chip

Navigate through Flare Pool until you reach Lava Lake Bridge where a cutscene triggers. After viewing it, backtrack along the same path. Psy-Bots will emerge from a previously closed door—defeat them and enter.

Inside the scrapyard area, defeat the Pyremites and locate the crane behind the battle zone. Jump up the platforms onto the crane itself, then use Morph Ball mode to navigate through it. When you reach the tip, bomb the red glowing object to free the Fire Chip.

Converting to Fire Shot

Return to MacKenzie at Base Camp in Fury Green (use the cargo launcher for quick access). He’ll modify the chip into the Fire Shot weapon—a high-heat subweapon that deals burning damage and melts ice. You start with 30 shots, replenishable via ammo drops or save stations.

Step 2: Accessing Ice Belt

With Fire Shot equipped, return to Sol Valley and head northwest to the Ice Belt entrance facility. Use your newly acquired Fire Shot on the frozen door blocking the entrance—watch it melt away, granting you access to this frigid research complex.

Initial Exploration

Upon entering via Sky Shuttle, you’ll arrive at the Loading Crane area. The door on your left contains a Save Room—use it immediately. Circle right to find breakable boxes hiding a bomb slot. Bomb it to open a nearby door and grab your first Missile Expansion.

Progress through Snowfield Accessway where you’ll encounter your first Ice Belt scan: the Ice Crawler enemy. The path ahead is blocked by ice—use Fire Shot to clear it and continue into the Snowfield proper.

Key Ice Belt Locations & Objectives

Meeting Tokabi

Progress through Facility Entrance into the Lobby, then head upstairs to the Control Room. Here you’ll meet Reger Tokabi, a Galactic Federation Sniper who becomes your ally. Scan him for your logbook, then interact with the terminal to receive the Area Map and your objective: reach the Power Generator.

Finding TK Codes

Throughout the facility, you’ll need to locate TK Codes to unlock psychic barriers. The first is in a biotank in a nearby lab room. Continue exploring until you find a wall grate covering a Morph Ball tunnel leading to Tracking Operations, where a Psychic Container holds the Psychic Lasso upgrade.

The Generator Puzzle

At the Power Generator deep in the facility, you’ll face a complex turbine puzzle. Use your Control Beam to slow time and weave through moving machinery to activate three turbine switches. Light beams indicate switch locations—follow them carefully.

Boss Fight: Keratos

After powering up the generator, descend into the Quarantine Chamber for an intense battle with Keratos, a massive boulder-like creature. Consult the official Nintendo support page for detailed boss strategies if needed.

Defeating Keratos rewards you with the Psychic Boost Ball—a crucial upgrade allowing you to boost around circular openings. Use it on the Sacred Shrine that appears to claim your Master Teleporter Key.

Essential Ice Belt Collectibles

The frozen facility contains numerous upgrades scattered throughout. Behind the delivery truck wreckage in Snowfield, shoot ice with Fire Shot to access a Shot Expansion via Morph Ball tunnel. In the Power Generator basement (accessed via terminal), navigate Morph Ball obstacles to secure an Energy Tank upgrade.

The Ancient Temple area requires solving a mote puzzle using Fire Shot and Psychic Visor to unlock the Psychic Spider Ball upgrade. Before leaving via the Spider Track, grab the Missile Expansion behind the collapsed walkway.

Pro Tips for Ice Belt Success

Watch for icy wind blasts on cliff edges—they can push you off platforms. Wait for winds to subside before crossing suspension bridges. The Scout Bot near the Snowfield entrance reveals remaining collectible locations when activated.

Some ceiling upgrades require returning later with advanced abilities not available during your first visit. Mark these locations on your map for future backtracking once you’ve acquired all necessary equipment.
