Even though Zotac is selling RTX 3060 to miners, NVIDIA’s new algorithm drops hash rate during mining

Even though Zotac is selling RTX 3060 to miners, NVIDIA's new algorithm drops hash rate during mining

NVIDIA’s new GeForce RTX 3060 is all set to debut in the coming days of the month; Zotac has already sent the GPUs, not to gamers but miners. Apart from announcing the dedicated mining GPUs, NVIDIA also announced that the GeForce RTX 3060 drivers would detect if the user is mining cryptocurrency.

This will reduce the performance by a whopping 50%, making these new RTX 30-series GPUs almost useless, which could somewhat decrease the absolute demand of these gaming GPUs that are being used openly by miners.

A miner has already got a ZOTAC GeForce RTX 3060 Twin Edge OC Edition and was tested by CryptoLeo to see if this could be used for mining. It seems NVIDIA’s anti-mining algorithm seems to be working because, after a minute or two of mining, the hash rate has dropped from 41.5 MH/s to 26-24 MH/s.

The miner didn’t even have the drivers for this card as it has not been officially launched in the market; the working anti-mining algorithm has been implemented in the BIOS itself. Well, only the RTX 3060 is the first card to feature this solution to detect mining.

This addresses two issues: Miners now buying new RTX 30-series GPUs will not be able to mine with a 50% less hash rate provided, NVIDIA puts the algorithm into other RTX 30-series GPUs. Second, this will force miners to buy NVIDIA’s new CMP 30HX, 40HX, 50HX, and 90HX GPUs for mining.
