Running out of stash space in Escape from Tarkov? Every successful raid fills your storage with valuable gear, but your limited inventory becomes a frustrating bottleneck. Smart players know three proven methods to expand storage—each with distinct advantages depending on your budget and playstyle. Here’s your actionable guide to finally solving Tarkov’s storage problem.

Escape from Tarkov: Stash Sizes & Upgrade Paths Compared

Method	Cost	Max Size	Survives Wipes?	Time Required
Standard Edition	$50	10×28 (280 slots)	Yes	Instant
Website Expansion	$3-$84	+2 to +28 lines	Yes	Instant
Prepare for Escape	$110	10×50 (500 slots)	Yes	Instant
Hideout Level 1	3.5M Roubles	10×36 (360 slots)	No	24 hours
Hideout Level 2	8.5M Roubles	10×46 (460 slots)	No	48 hours
Hideout Level 3	150K Euros	10×66 (660 slots)	No	96 hours

Method 1: Website Stash Expansion (Best Value)

The official Escape from Tarkov website now offers direct stash line purchases starting at just $3 for 2 additional lines, expandable up to 28 extra lines. This represents the most cost-effective permanent upgrade available.

How to purchase:

Visit the Escape from Tarkov Expansions page
Select 2-28 additional stash lines ($3-$84)
Complete secure payment
Activation occurs immediately after payment confirmation

Critical advantage: These purchased upgrades remain permanent through all character wipes, unlike Hideout upgrades that reset with each wipe cycle.

Method 2: Hideout Stash Upgrades (Free but Grindy)

Players preferring to earn upgrades through gameplay can expand storage via the Hideout system, reaching a maximum of 10×66 at Level 3.

Level 1 Requirements (10×36):

3,500,000 Roubles, 1 Hand Drill, 7 Packs of Screws, 4 WD-40 (100ml)
24-hour construction time
Vents Level 1 prerequisite

Level 2 Requirements (10×46):

8,500,000 Roubles, 2 Electric Drills, 8 Packs of Screws
48-hour construction time
Heating Level 2, Vents Level 2, Prapor and Ragman Loyalty Level 3 required

Level 3 Requirements (10×66):

150,000 Euros and 96-hour construction time
Generator Level 3, Workbench Level 3, Heating Level 3, Intelligence Center Level 3, Peacekeeper and Ragman Loyalty Level 4

Major drawback: With every wipe, players must re-upgrade their stash from scratch, making this a recurring investment rather than permanent solution.

Method 3: Edition Upgrade

Players can purchase higher game editions that progressively increase stash size—Standard Edition provides base size, while Prepare for Escape Edition grants a Level 3 Stash (10×50). You only pay the price difference when upgrading between editions.

While editions bundle additional benefits like larger secure containers and improved trader reputation, the maximum stash size achievable through edition upgrades caps at 10×48, making website expansions superior for pure storage needs.

Smart Storage Before Upgrading

High-efficiency containers:

Items Case: 16 slots hold 64 items (4× efficiency)
Weapon Case: 10 slots hold multiple rifles
Dogtag Case: 1 slot stores 100 dogtags

Space-positive rigs: Certain tactical vests provide more internal storage than external footprint. The Blackhawk Chest Rig and similar options create “free” inventory space.

Vertical stacking: Store smaller backpacks inside larger ones to maximize space efficiency without consuming additional horizontal slots.

Arena Leaderboard Rewards

Players who reach top ten in Arena leaderboard categories receive an additional two lines of stash inventory after each wipe commences. This reward applies per wipe, allowing gradual permanent expansion through competitive performance.

The Winning Strategy

Immediate relief: Website expansions deliver instant permanent storage starting at $3—unmatched value for money.

Patient players: Hideout grinding costs nothing but demands hundreds of hours and resets with wipes.

All-in commitment: Edition upgrades make sense only if you want bundled premium features beyond storage.

Optimal approach: Purchase 10-15 website expansion lines for permanent base storage ($15-$45), supplement with efficient containers and rigs, then pursue Hideout upgrades during late-wipe progression when resources accumulate naturally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do website stash purchases survive character wipes?

Yes, stash upgrades purchased through the official Escape from Tarkov website remain permanently active and survive all character wipes. The problem with Hideout upgrades is that with every wipe, players must re-upgrade their stash from scratch. Website purchases and edition-based stash sizes persist indefinitely since they’re tied to your account rather than your character progression, making them one-time investments rather than recurring grinds.

What items can’t be stored inside secure containers for Hideout upgrades?

The game’s code does not look inside your Secure Container, Pockets, or Backpack when you are in the hideout menu. All required items for Hideout upgrades must be placed in your main stash storage area—the game won’t recognize items stored in secure containers, equipped pockets, or worn backpacks. Always transfer necessary items out of your containers and into the general stash space before attempting an upgrade.
