Talks of a proposed European Super League have been doing the rounds for more than a year now, and UEFA is planning to change the Champions League format to suit combat the tournament and prevent it from ever coming into existence in the first place.
Premier League clubs will be the most affected by the proposed changes in the tournament, with teams outside the English top four getting the chance to crack at the pinnacle of European competition based on their UEFA coefficient. Further details regarding the proposed changes are yet to be officially announced or even detailed by the governing body.
With the Europa Conference League’s addition alongside the already existing Europa League, continental football is set to receive an overhaul in the years to come. The formally proposed change in the Champions League format is set to be implemented in 2024.
According to RMC Sport, ‘UEFA is also considering setting up a protection system for certain “historic” teams in the event that they do not qualify through their championship. This point is still unclear, but it is a basis for UEFA’s work.’
Hence, teams that endure a difficult domestic season can still be optimistic about securing a berth in Europe the next season due to the new system set to be put in place three years from now. Moreover, the 32-team competition is set to become a 36-team with the implementation of the new format that is expected to discourage the inception of the European Super League.
