Core Pokemon (8-10 cards):

2x Meowscarada + evolution line (non-EX attacker for EX matchups)
1-2x Lilligant (HP boost ability, stackable)
Optional: Cornerstone Mask Ogerpon EX (wall tactics)

Trainer & Support Cards:

2x Professor’s Research (draw power)
2x Poke Ball (consistency)
2x X Speed (mobility)
Energy cards and situational trainers

Strategy & Gameplay Tips

Whimsicott EX’s Grass Knot becomes exceptionally powerful against Pokemon with high Retreat Costs, dealing 40 base damage plus 30 additional damage per Retreat Cost point. Against Guzzlord EX (4 Retreat Cost), this translates to 160 damage—enough to severely threaten one of the meta’s scariest cards.

The deck thrives on switching mechanics thanks to cheap Retreat Costs across your lineup. Use Whimsicott EX against heavy Pokemon while deploying Meowscarada against EX threats or Pom-Pom Oricorio (which Whimsicott can’t damage).

Pro Tip: Hold Sprigatito’s evolution if you’ve exhausted Poke Balls—its Cry for Help ability becomes more effective at finding needed evolution cards when your deck thins out.

HP Stacking Synergy

Maximize survivability by stacking HP bonuses. Two Lilligant cards on the Bench add 40 HP through their stackable ability, and combining this with Leaf Cape grants Whimsicott EX a massive 210 HP total—transforming it from a glass cannon into a durable threat.

Weaknesses & Counters

Fire-type decks pose significant challenges, particularly prevalent threats like Entei EX and Mega Blaziken EX that dominate the current metagame. Against these matchups, rely on Meowscarada and maintain board control through strategic switching.

FAQs

Q: Is Whimsicott EX viable in the current meta?

Whimsicott EX serves as a niche counter-pick rather than a tier-one staple. It excels against specific matchups like Guzzlord EX and other high-Retreat Cost Pokemon but struggles against the Fire-heavy meta dominated by Mega Blaziken EX. It works best as a tech choice in Grass-focused decks or alongside versatile partners like Meowscarada.

Q: What’s the best starting Pokemon for a Whimsicott EX deck?

Cottonee is your primary starter, but consider opening with Cornerstone Mask Ogerpon EX or Sprigatito if you need time setting up. The cheap Retreat Costs across your deck allow flexible switching, so don’t worry about getting locked into unfavorable positions early. Always prioritize getting energy on Whimsicott EX by turn two for maximum pressure.
