What India Will Now Manufacture

The approved projects cover game-changing components: Multi-Layer and HDI PCBs (circuit boards powering smartphones, laptops, EVs), Camera Modules (for phones, drones, medical devices, automotive systems), Copper Clad Laminates (India’s first facility—base material for all PCBs), and Polypropylene Films (key material for capacitors in consumer electronics).

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that 100% of India’s copper clad laminate demand will now be met domestically, while 20% of PCB and 15% of camera module requirements will be produced locally. The remaining 60% of output will target export markets.

From Assembly to Core Manufacturing

This marks India’s transition from merely assembling electronics to manufacturing core components and materials. Until now, India imported nearly all copper clad laminates—the foundational material for PCBs used in every electronic device. Establishing domestic CCL production creates a complete supply chain from raw materials to finished products.

The scheme received overwhelming response with 249 applications representing ₹1.15 lakh crore investment and potential creation of 1.42 lakh jobs—the highest-ever commitment in India’s electronics sector. Units spread across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh ensure balanced regional growth beyond metros.

Strategic Impact: Defence, EVs, and Telecom

Domestic component manufacturing builds trusted supply chains critical for defense electronics, 5G telecom equipment, electric vehicles, and renewable energy systems. High-skill jobs in manufacturing and R&D will emerge, while reduced import dependence lowers product costs for consumers.

ECMS complements the PLI scheme and India Semiconductor Mission, creating a seamless value chain from chips to devices. This positions India as a product nation capable of end-to-end design, manufacturing, and export.
