Mafia: The Old Country Review – A Visually Stunning Journey Through 1900s Sicily

Mafia: The Old Country takes players back to the brutal origins of organized crime in early 1900s Sicily, delivering mixed reviews from critics who praised the game’s narrative, characters, and world design, but criticized some of its outdated gameplay mechanics. This prequel to the beloved crime series promises authenticity but struggles with execution.

Mafia: The Old Country Game Overview: From Slave to Mobster

Set in Sicily, Italy, in the early 1900s, the game follows Enzo Favara, a carusu who becomes embroiled in the rise and fall of the fictional Torrisi crime family. Sold to slavers at a young age, he begins the game working in a mine, dreaming of a better life, eventually finding his path through the dangerous world of Sicilian organized crime.

Essential Game Information

What Critics Are Saying: Beauty Meets Mediocrity

The consensus among reviewers reveals a game of contrasts. Despite its apparent detail, Mafia: The Old Country feels more like an elaborate museum exhibit than a video game, while its gameplay is as bland as room-temp ragù out of the jar. However, the town’s historic architecture, marketplace dynamics, and rural surroundings all contribute to an immersive experience that prioritizes authenticity over sheer size.

Gameplay Mechanics: Period-Authentic but Limited

The game features immersive third-person action-adventure mechanics, including close-quarters combat with blades, firearms like handguns and shotguns, and stealth takedowns. Players can explore the Sicilian countryside on horseback or in period-authentic motorcars, but bland, frustrating gameplay make this the weakest Mafia yet according to some critics.

Visual Excellence in an Authentic Setting

Where Mafia: The Old Country truly shines is in its recreation of 1900s Sicily. With its authentic Sicilian setting, cutting-edge Unreal Engine 5 visuals, and focus on the historical origins of organized crime, it promises to deliver both spectacular action and meaningful storytelling. The attention to historical detail creates an immersive atmosphere that transports players to this dangerous era.

For crime game enthusiasts and action-adventure fans, the visual fidelity represents a significant achievement in historical gaming.

Character Development: Enzo Favara’s Journey

Enzo Favara is a young and ambitious mobster who by chance finds his way into the Torrisi Crime Family led by Bernardo Torrisi. However, critics note that Enzo is an uninteresting lead, a bland cipher who lacks any noticeable weaknesses, which impacts the overall narrative engagement.

Worth Playing Despite Flaws?

I’d say it’s been worth the wait, especially if you’re tired of open-world bloat, suggests some reviewers. The game offers a focused, linear experience that contrasts sharply with modern open-world trends. For players seeking narrative-driven games and historical gaming experiences, The Old Country provides unique value despite its mechanical shortcomings.

Final Verdict: Beautiful but Flawed

Mafia: The Old Country succeeds as a visual showcase of 1900s Sicily and delivers an authentic historical atmosphere. However, outdated gameplay mechanics and character development issues prevent it from reaching the heights of its predecessors in the series.
