The month of May witnessed a significant milestone in India’s 5G smartphone market, as shipments surpassed 100 million units, setting a new record. The rapid pace of 5G roll-out in the country has contributed to this achievement. CyberMedia Research (CMR) has reported a remarkable growth of over 28 times in 5G smartphone shipments since its initial launch.
During May, 5G smartphones dominated 48% of the overall smartphone market, with Samsung emerging as the frontrunner in the 5G segment. Samsung was closely trailed by OnePlus and Vivo, further solidifying their presence in the competitive 5G market. These three brands collectively captured a substantial 60% market share in the 5G segment, as reported by Shipra Sinha, an analyst at CMR’s Industry Intelligence Group.
All About 5G Smartphone Shipments
With the expansion of 5G coverage across various regions in India, the 5G smartphone market is projected to grow by over 70% year-on-year by the end of this year. The growth trajectory has been impressive, with 5G shipments in India experiencing more than a 13-fold increase since their introduction in 2020.
In the year 2022 alone, nearly 100 new 5G smartphones were launched in the Indian market, reflecting the increasing focus on providing consumers with access to the latest connectivity technology.
However, the widespread adoption of 5G in India will depend on several factors, including the availability of affordable 5G smartphones in the market. A previous study conducted by CMR emphasized the importance of introducing 5G devices in the affordable smartphone segment, priced below ₹10,000.
Notably, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel initiated the roll-out of their 5G networks in October 2022 and have made substantial progress in expanding coverage across the country. Their efforts have played a significant role in bringing 5G connectivity to a larger population.
As India continues its journey towards widespread 5G adoption, the increasing shipment volumes and expanding network coverage indicate a promising future for the growth and utilization of 5G technology in the country.
