For the third consecutive quarter, shipments of smartphones from India have decreased, according to Q1 2023 shipment data. The drop in Indian shipments this quarter is the largest ever. In Q1 2023, the Indian smartphone market reported a 19% year-over-year fall in shipments, according to Counterpoint Research research. The reduction has been linked to weak demand, a large buildup of inventory starting in 2022, market circumstances, and a rise in consumer preference for reconditioned phones.

Shipments of smartphones from India fell from 38 million in Q1 2022 to roughly 31 million in Q1 2023, a drop of about 19%. Consumer demand is concentrated around promotional periods when smartphone and e-commerce companies give device discounts, claims Counterpoint. The market share of 5G smartphones continues to rise in overall shipments despite dropping shipment numbers. 5G shipments increased by 23% year over year and now account for 43% of all shipments.

The sub-₹30,000 segment saw the greatest decrease in shipments. Shipments of smartphones costing more than ₹30,000 have increased. Shipments of devices costing over ₹45,000 increased by 66% year over year in the first quarter of 2023, while shipments of smartphones costing between ₹30,000 and ₹45,000 increased by 60%.

Shipments decreased by 33% in the ₹20,000–₹30,000 category, and by 34% in the ₹10,000–₹20,000 segment. The sub-₹10,000 segment saw a 9% reduction. Samsung, which held a 20% market share in Q1 2022, maintained that position, but a drop in Xiaomi’s market share propelled it to the top spot in Q2 2023. Due in large part to the Galaxy S23 series, Samsung announced a 247% year-over-year gain in the over ₹45,000 market.

Xiaomi, which has a 23% market share in Q1 2022, slipped to third place after seeing its share drop to 16%. According to the survey, Xiaomi’s dependence on the online market, despite higher demand in the offline sector, is one of the factors contributing to the company’s declining market share. Vivo, which has a significant offline and online presence, saw an increase in market share from 15% to 17% in the first quarter of 2023. As a result, the business was able to claim second place. Oppo and Realme, respectively, claimed the fourth and fifth rankings. Realme’s market share decreased from 16% to 9%, while Oppo’s rose from 9% to 12%.

The Cupertino behemoth Apple recorded a 50% increase in shipments year over year in the first quarter of 2023, taking 6% of the nation’s overall smartphone market. The firm obtained 62% of the ultra-premium market, which consists of gadgets costing more than ₹45,000. In this market, an iPhone was sold three out of every five times.
