Chelsea have spent 38% of the Premier League’s total expenditure on signings in the January transfer window. The total amount spent is £184 million, which eclipses any amount spent during the midseason window even under former owner Roman Abramovich.

The Blues have maintained their reputation of spending big in the transfer market under their new owners. And Todd Boehly’s strategy of spreading out transfer fees over long periods has helped them finalise big-money deals without breaching FFP regulations.

The average age of the new signings is just over 20, and Boehly is building a project for the future rather than the present. Interestingly, no money was spent in the January transfer window for the last three years. And after an impressive window in the summer, Boehly is hard at it again during the middle of the campaign.

Mykhaylo Mudryk became one of the most expensive January signings of all-time, and was given the longest contract in the Premier League at eight-and-a-half years long. His transfer fee is spent over that time as well, which makes it a much more affordable deal than it seems.

FIFA are now revisiting their policies on spreading out transfer fees, after complaints from several big clubs over the way Chelsea have conducted their business this season. However, the transfers have already gone through and the team for the future is already built significantly.
