Ubisoft confirms Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still in development

Following a week of game cancellations and another Skull and Bones delay, Ubisoft provides a ray of sunshine for fans by confirming that Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still in the works. Following news this week that the upcoming pirate-themed title, Skull and Bones, had been delayed for the sixth time, the French company appears to be in for a rough patch. The announcement came on the heels of Ubisoft cancelling three unannounced games, bringing their total to seven in the last six months.

Ubisoft also admitted that sales for Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope and Just Dance 2023 did not meet expectations, adding to the bad news. Naturally, the news had a direct negative impact on Ubisoft’s stock prices, with the shares dropping significantly and investors concerned. Fans were also concerned that the oft-delayed Beyond Good and Evil 2 was one of those games that Ubisoft had given up on, especially since there hasn’t been a meaningful update in quite some time.

Ubisoft issued a brief update confirming that the development of Beyond Good and Evil 2 had not been hampered by recent events at the company.

According to a company spokesperson, “Beyond Good and Evil 2’s development is underway and the team is hard at work to deliver on its ambitious promise.” Unfortunately, that’s where the update largely ended, so fans will have to wait for now.

It’s understandable that fans are anxious and concerned about the project. The game has been in development for about 15 years, first leaking and teased in 2009 before going dark for a long time. Beyond Good and Evil 2 would receive an official announcement trailer at E3 in 2017, would see the departure of longtime Ubisoft employee Michel Ancel, and would receive only minor updates, typically via financial reports rather than trailers or other media.

As difficult as things appear to be for Ubisoft at the moment, 2023 could be the year that puts the company back on track. While there is always room for surprises, Ubisoft has already announced a number of high-profile games for 2023, including The Division Heartland, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and the aforementioned Skull and Bones. Another game on fans’ radars is Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which promises to return the series to its classic formula of parkour, action, and linear storytelling.
