The 2023 AFC Asian Cup will be unique in that it will be the first to have Semi-Automated Offside Technology to assist referees. The AFC has now become the first continental federation to deploy the SAOT at such a level, making history in the process.
The technology was used at the 2022 FIFA World Cup as well, alongside the UEFA Champions League. However, it hasn’t been used in the Euros or the Copa America yet, which is where the AFC has made the breakthrough.
Semi-Automated Offside Technology to assist referees at 2023 AFC Asian Cup
The tournament will take place from 12 January 2024 to 10 February 2024, and will consist of 51 matches. All the games will make use of the Semi-Automated Offside Technology to assist referees to make the right decision.
12 strategically placed cameras across the field will allow for unique and accurate imaging of players deemed to be in an offside position. The cameras will allow VAR to make a highly accurate decision, upon replicating the positions of the players in the form of 3D models.
They will then be able to communicate their decision with the on field referee, who still maintains the authority in terms of the final call. But controversial offside decisions might be cut down upon completely with the use of the new technology.
