AMD refuses to accept that Radeon RX 7900 XTX RMA is heating up too much

AMD has reportedly refused an RMA request for its Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card, which was reaching temperatures of up to 110 degrees Celsius. It’s been a few weeks since the AMD Radeon RX 7900 series was released, and most consumers are finally receiving their cards after a long wait. However, high temperatures (standard and junction) have lately been reported on the reference MBA design. One such issue has recently been reported by a Reddit user who purchased the reference version of the card but his card does not appear to be functioning properly.

A few days back, Redditor u/nero1338, stated in the r/AMDHelp subreddit that his Radeon RX 7900 XTX reference graphics card was reaching 110C Junction temperatures when playing Modern Warfare II. He claims that his fans spike to 100%, and despite reinstalling the most recent drivers and manually adjusting his case fan speeds to 100%, nothing appears to work for him. The Redditor sent an RMA request to AMD directly, but it was denied.

He claims that his RMA request for the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Reference ‘MBA’ graphics card was denied, and AMD claims that the 110C Junction temperatures are within the graphics card’s normal operating range. What is not usual is that the graphics card is downclocking owing to greater temperatures, resulting in a loss of performance.

Hi everyone, As we know so far, Quite many people have problems with the refererence 7900xtx cards, reaching 110 Junction Temps, 100% fan Speed and still loosing performance due downclocking.

I just got the reply of my RMA request: Thank you for your email. The temperatures are normal if you there is any issue please, contact us back. Thanks for contacting AMD.

Another user reacted, saying that AMD granted him an RMA request but that he couldn’t return it for a refund because the packaging had been opened.

In terms of overheating, it appears that this is mainly a serious issue with AMD’s own reference ‘MBA’ design, which the red team gushed about during its presentation about how amazing it was and how simple it was for consumers to upgrade to when compared to NVIDIA’s new RTX 40 series cards.

All MBA designs can reach hotspot temperatures of 110 degrees Celsius, which appears to be the hard limit before the card throttles down to a lower clock speed, resulting in decreased performance. Because they use proper 3 to 3.5-slot coolers and custom PCB designs, none of the custom designs experience overheating.

However, we can’t totally blame the cooler for this issue, as discovered by Der8auer, who investigated the issue reported by another user. The mounting pressure, thermal paste quality, and thermal pads used by the cards appear to be major issues. The overheating concerns are resolved once fresh ones are installed and the card is remounted. However, it is something that AMD should not disregard and that users should not have to deal with on their own.
