Germany have crashed out of the 2022 World Cup, finishing third in their group behind Japan and Spain. This is the second consecutive edition that the 2014 winners have failed to make it out of their group.

They were able to beat Costa Rica 4-2 after coming back from 2-1 down. But, it wasn’t enough to earn them qualification as Spain were defeated 2-1 by Japan – the game turned out to be eerily similar to their win against Germany – turning over a 1-0 scoreline at half time to win.

At half-time, both Spain and Germany were leading their matches 1-0 respectively. But, they failed to hold on to their advantage, with both teams being able to make it 2-1 following the break.

Jamal Musiala was once again the brightest spark in the team for Germany, hitting the post twice in the second half. After creating a number of chances to score, Hansi Flick’s side were able to get back to a winning position following a brace from Kai Havertz, and a second World Cup goal from Niclas Fullkrug to seal the win.

Japan, on the other hand, did not allow Spain an inch of space as they parked the bus. Their second goal was a very controversial decision from VAR, as the ball was clearly out of play before it was passed back in.

But with that goal, Japan have won their group and will face Croatia in the Round of 16 while runners-up Spain will go up against Morocco.
