Argentina returned to winning ways in their second World Cup match against Mexico. The South American champions earned a 2-0 win with brilliant goals from Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez that helped the team earn three vital points.

Following their shocking loss against Saudi Arabia in the first game, it was a do-or-die game for Lionel Scaloni’s men. And they persevered and can qualify for the knockout stages with a win against Poland in their final game.

During the first half, Argentina failed to register a shot on target. Angel Di Maria proved to be a constant nuisance for the defenders, with his skilful footwork providing a spark throughout his time on the pitch.

Di Maria then set up Lionel Messi for his 25-yard wonder strike to beat Memo Ochoa and break the deadlock. The PSG star has now levelled Diego Maradona with eight World Cup goals in 21 games.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner would then turn provider, assisting Enzo Fernandez for his picture-perfect curler from the left flank after a short corner.

Mexico did put in a spirited display, but was unable to produce in the final third. The result sees them drop to the bottom of the group, while Argentina are now in second place.
