Memo Ochoa penalty save denies Lewandowski first World Cup goal

Memo Ochoa is a name that springs up every four years, producing wonderful goalkeeping displays, before disappearing the same way it arrived. And last night, we were reminded of exactly how good the veteran is.

Playing in his fifth World Cup, Ochoa denied Robert Lewandowski from the penalty spot. And in doing so, he became the first Mexican goalkeeper to ever save a penalty at the grandest stage of all, in a very long time. He also helped start Mexico’s campaign with a clean sheet against a fearsome polish attack.

Memo Ochoa steps up yet again to deny Lewandowski

The Barcelona forward was awarded a penalty after a tussle with Hector Moreno. The decision was made after consulting with the VAR, but it was a weak attempt from Lewandowski denied by Memo Ochoa to remain goalless in all of his World Cup appearances till date.

Mexico were on the attack for a significant portion of the match, but despite having several close chances, they weren’t able to break the deadlock. As a result, the two sides have had to share a point in what was the second goalless draw of the evening.

But this will be the best possible results for Argentina, who suffered a shocking defeat against Saudi Arabia earlier yesterday. The way things stand, the Albiceleste have a decent chance of making it out of their group once again.
