Samsung develops ‘MicroLED on Silicon’ for AR headset

Samsung is reportedly developing “MicroLED on Silicon” (LEDoS) for augmented reality (AR) headsets. The OLED (organic light-emitting diode) displays have been used in VR headsets for years, but now the company is developing next generation technology for AR displays that will be based on MicroLED. Currently, glass is used as the base for displays rather than silicon, reports GSMArena.

The South Korean tech giant’s long-term objective is to create LEDoS screens with 6,600 pixel-per-inch (ppi) resolution, the report said. Samsung Display is creating OLED on Silicon (OLEDoS) panels in addition to LEDoS. However, MicroLED is brighter and hence more suited for AR applications.

However, the chief of the Samsung Display group, Kim Min-woo, stated that the corporate is growing subsequent gen tech for AR shows that will probably be primarily based on MicroLED, studies The Elec. Specifically, the know-how known as MicroLED on Silicon (shortened to “LEDoS”). Current shows are sometimes made on a glass substrate reasonably than silicon.

The long-term purpose for Samsung is to develop LEDoS shows with 6,600 pixels per inch (PPI). Kim says that the minimal for AR shows is 5,000ppi and the space between pixels should be 5 micrometers or smaller. The crimson, inexperienced and blue sub-pixels needs to be 3 micrometers or smaller.

The distinction between AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) is that AR wants brighter shows as a result of they’re competing with ambient lighting – it integrates digital objects into the true world and to do it nicely, it must match the brightness of the sunshine across the consumer.

On the other hand, VR only uses virtual reality because the VR screen isolates the user from the outside world, and lesser brightness can be effective. VR shows shut you off from the world, so decrease brightness can do the job. In addition to LEDoS, Samsung Display can be growing OLED on Silicon (OLEDoS) panels, in accordance with Kim. MicroLEDs needs to be brighter and therefor higher suited to AR purposes, although.
