DDR5 Memory Prices keep falling as AMD and Intel gear to launch their Next-Generation CPUs

DDR5 memory prices are falling, particularly since the beginning of 2022, which bodes well for next-generation Intel Raptor Lake and AMD Ryzen 7000 CPU architectures. Currently, 16GB dual-channel DDR5 memory kits sell for roughly $120 to $130, which is much less than the $500 to $1,000 pricing from a few months ago.

Users should expect DDR5 to continue to be the new standard for enthusiasts, gamers, and power users in the second half of this year. Not only are US consumers benefiting from the lower pricing, but ComputerBase says that European markets are also enjoying substantial price decreases.

This new pricing trend does not apply to all DDR5 kits. Premium memory kits in the 6000 Mbps+ range continue to be expensive, prompting some buyers to opt for less expensive solutions for the time being. Memory will be key in determining the baseline price for next-generation platforms since the blue team (Intel) will have a significant advantage in having support for both DDR5 and DDR4 standards, whilst AMD will only offer DDR5 compatibility. The latter is a more future-proof option, but with DDR5 still in its early stages, you may end up paying a higher price for a kit that will be replaced by similar-cost but higher-spec DRAM modules in a few months.

Companies such as Kingston, Crucial, and Patriot sell 16GB DDR5 kits with base speeds of 4800 Mbps for around $110 to $120

With these costs being so low for everyone and memory kits plateauing around the 5200 to 5600 MHz areas, sales in the DIY sector will undoubtedly expand. Consumers are currently paying close to $250 for DDR5-5200 and somewhat higher memory. Simultaneously, 16 GB DDR4-3200 memory kits (CL16) may be acquired for roughly 50-60 USD, which is less than half the price.

G.Skill and their premium Trident Z DDR5-6000 CL36 memory kits were seen at $4,000 at the beginning of January, but costs have already dropped to $800 five months later. Analysts expect that DDR5 memory will reach price parity with DDR4 kits within two years after its debut.

With this new cost for next-generation DDR5 kits, consumers will be able to obtain incredible speeds and top memory technology at the same prices we experienced with DDR4 kits over the last few years. With the upcoming AMD Zen 4-based Ryzen 7000 and Raptor Lake CPU lines, both AMD and Intel will benefit from the current pricing trend. According to this estimate, AMD may even gain a little advantage in overall DDR5 support.

It is unclear whether pricing for base DDR5 kits will remain this low, or whether e-commerce markets will combine popular processors with incredibly cost DDR5 dual-channel kits, particularly as the holiday season approaches. Companies will make many announcements to retailers in September. DDR5 memory is expected to become the industry standard as soon as the second quarter of the following year.
