Lionel Messi scored his 500th career goal almost five years ago, and the strike was followed by an iconic celebration. After netting in the dying stages of the Clasico against Real Madrid in 2017, the Argentine celebrated by holding up his shirt to the fans at the Santiago Bernabeu.
That iconic shirt has now been sold at a crazy price – not as high as the ‘Hand of God’ shirt that Maradona scored in – which went for over £7 million.
Lionel Messi’s 500-goal shirt sold by original owner
Instagram user ‘anishfutbol’ has sold the legend’s shirt after posting the following message:
“It has arrived in my collection… THAT shirt which Leo [Messi] held up after deciding El Clasico with his 500th goal,” he wrote.
The shirt went on to be sold for $450,000 after there was huge demand from people. Messi went on to become the top scorer for the club, as well as the league, netting 37 in La Liga. Under Luis Enrique, they would progress to the quarter finals of the Champions League, and finish second in La Liga.
They were able to finish the season with some silverware, though, winning the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de Espana.
