Real Madrid 3-1 Manchester City (6-5 agg.): Rodrygo and Benzema seal UCL final spot with miraculous comeback

Real Madrid have sealed their spot in the finals of the 21/22 Champions League after a third consecutive hat-trick at the Santiago Bernabeu. Manchester City were defeated 3-1 by the new La Liga champions in a comeback for the ages as their hopes of securing a maiden Champions League trophy have been put to rest again.

During the initial phase of the game, Los Blancos were quite wasteful with their chances, failing to register a single shot on target early on. Riyad Mahrez broke the deadlock with a smashing finish to beat Thibaut Courtois at his near post in the 73rd minute.

Real Madrid pull of miraculous comeback in the final minutes of the game

Rodrygo came to the rescue of Carlo Ancelotti’s side in the 90th minute, tapping in from close range after Benzema set him up perfectly in front of goal. The Brazilian would be at the end of a cross from Dani Carvajal, which Marco Asensio flicked on to level the tie only one minute later.

The two teams headed into extra time, and Ruben Dias conceded a penalty by fouling Karim Benzema in the box. The Frenchman sent Ederson the wrong way to match Cristiano Ronaldo’s tally of scoring the most goals in the knockout stages of the Champions League. Benzema has now scored 15 goals in the tournament this season.

This will be Carlo Ancelotti’s unprecedented 5th Champions League final, and Real Madrid’s 17th as they look to make it 14 titles against Liverpool.
