AMD RDNA 3 GPUs For Radeon RX 7000 Graphics Cards will be featuring its 5nm & 6nm Process nodes

AMD has confirmed that the 5nm and 6nm process nodes will be used in their next-generation RDNA 3 GPU-powered Radeon RX 7000 series. Brian Walters, AMD’s Infinity Data Fabric Silicon design engineer, revealed the information on LinkedIn. Walters has worked on a variety of projects, including the next-generation graphics lineup, which includes RDNA 3 powered Navi 31, Navi 32, Navi 33, and Instinct MI300.

According to the details, it appears that prior speculations that the MCM GPUs will have a hybrid 5nm and 6nm layout have been confirmed. The Navi 31 and Navi 32 hybrid MCM chips will be available in a 5nm production node for the GCD (Graphics Computer Dies) and a 6nm process node for the IOD. A monolithic package based on the 6nm process node will be used for the AMD Navi 33 GPU.

The information also mentions AMD’s next-generation Instinct MI300 GPU, which will be built on a 6nm production node but will have a monolithic design similar to the MI200 GPU. According to previous speculations, the next-gen Instinct range will use a quad GCD MCM GPU design, which will be completely insane.

AMD RDNA 3 Navi 31 GPUs For Radeon RX 7800/7900 Series

The next-generation Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics card would be powered by the AMD Navi 31 GPU, which is the top RDNA 3 processor. We’ve heard that AMD’s next-gen RDNA 3 GPUs will use WGP (Work Group Processors) instead of CU (Compute Units).

Two GCDs (Graphics Core Die) and a single MCD are used in the Navi 31 GPU arrangement depicted below (Multi-Cache Die). Each Shader Engine has two Shader Arrays (2 per SE / 6 per GCD / 12 total) and each Shader Engine has three Shader Engines (6 total). Each Shader Array has 5 WGPs (10 per SE / 30 per GCD / 60 total), each with 8 SIMD32 units and 32 ALUs (40 SIMD32 per SA / 80 per SE / 240 per GCD / 480 total). These SIMD32 units add up to 7,680 cores per GCD, for a total of 15,360 cores.

The Navi 31 (RDNA 3) MCD will have 256-512 MB of Infinity Cache and will be connected to the two GCDs through a next-generation Infinity Fabric connection. There should be four memory connect links on each GPU (32-bit). For a 256-bit bus interface, that’s a total of 8 32-bit memory controllers.

There have been reports that the next RDNA 3 GPUs will beat all NVIDIA has to offer in terms of rasterization performance. AMD appears to be taking the lead by introducing the first MCM-powered GPUs as part of its Radeon RX graphics card lineup. However, NVIDIA is expected to make a speedy transition to their MCM GPU portfolio, which will give a performance improvement of over 3x above Ampere GPUs.

AMD RDNA 3 Navi 32 GPUs For Radeon RX 7700 Series

One of the two MCM GPUs in the RDNA 3 series will be the AMD Navi 32 GPU. Two GCDs (Graphics Computer Dies) and a single MCD will be included in the GPU (Multi-Cache Die). The die is extremely similar to the flagship Navi 31 GPU, except each die has one fewer Shader Engine. The AMD Navi 32 GCD will be built on TSMC’s 5nm process node, while the MCD will be built on TSMC’s 6nm manufacturing node. According to rumors, AMD will be able to choose between Samsung and TSMC for the 6nm die.

Each Shader Engine has two Shader Arrays (2 per SE / 4 per GCD / 8 total) and each Shader Engine has two Shader Engines (4 total). Each Shader Array is made up of 5 WGPs (10 per SE / 20 per GCD / 40 total), each containing 8 SIMD32 units and 32 ALUs (40 SIMD32 per SA / 80 SE / 160 GCD / 320 total). These SIMD32 units add up to 5120 cores per GCD and a total of 10,240 cores.

The Navi 32 (RDNA 3) MCD will include 384 MB of Infinity Cache and will be connected to the two GCDs through a next-generation Infinity Fabric interface. There should be three memory connect links on each GPU (32-bit). For a 192-bit bus interface, that’s a total of 6 32-bit memory controllers.

This would boost the AMD Radeon RX 7700 series’ performance over that of the RX 6800 and RX 6900 series, resulting in a significant increase in graphics horsepower in games. This would also increase the RX 6700 XT’s power output, which is now rated at 230W but may be increased to 270-300W.

AMD RDNA 3 Navi 33 GPUs For Radeon RX 7600 Series

Within the RDNA 3 family, the AMD Navi 33 GPU will kick off the monolithic section. A single die will be used for the GPU. The device is extremely similar to the flagship Navi 21 GPU, and manufacture is planned to take place on a 6nm production node.

The Navi 33 GCD features two Shader Engines, each with two Shader Arrays (2 per SE / total of four). Each Shader Array is made up of five WGPs (10 per SE / 20 total), each of which has eight SIMD32 units with 32 ALUs (40 SIMD32 per SA / 80 per SE / 160 total). These SIMD32 units add up to 5120 cores, which is the same as the RX 6900 XT’s core count (Navi 21 XTX GPU).

The Infinity Cache capacity of the Navi 33 (RDNA 3) is projected to be 256 MB. There should be two memory connect links on each GPU (32-bit). For a 128-bit bus interface, that’s a total of four 32-bit memory controllers. With a TDP of roughly 200W, the AMD Radeon RX 7600 series would outperform the RX 6800 and RX 6900 series in terms of performance.

The AMD RDNA 3 ‘Navi 3X’ GPU-powered Radeon RX graphics card portfolio is projected to outperform previous RDNA 2 offerings by up to 3x. It would be a significant step ahead in graphics evolution, and now that AMD is on board with next-gen technologies like FSR and Raytracing, expect a fierce next-gen battle between the red and green sides. AMD has also announced that its RDNA 3 series will be available later this year.
