IPL 2022: NO final decision for Ahmedabad team, will there be only 9 teams?

Two new teams were supposed to be added in the next season of IPL. The management of Ahmedabad franchise are keen to get players like Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Shreyas Iyer Shikhar Dhawan and coach Ravi Shastri on board. Shortly before the mega auction, the truth is there is no such franchise as Ahmedabad in IPL. BCCI is yet to go to Irelia Company Pvt. and run the IPL team from Ahmedabad.

On being asked about this matter an irritated BCCI official stated “Don’t ask me, ask the Secretary about this. We are unaware on the status & issue of Ahmedabad IPL team”

CVC Capital company got the ownership of Ahmedabad team on 25th October with a bid of 5625 crores. Unfortunately, the team was being part of the controversy for its alleged investments in a betting company. BCCI till date hasn’t released any official statement nor has there been any update from the team.

It is to be taken into account that IPL 2022 player retention deadline will be ending on 30th Novemebr 2021. BCCI has asked the franchises to finalise their list of retained players before the deadline. The two new teams, which are Ahmedabad and lucknow will get an extended time period till 25th December in order to finalise 3 players before the mega auction for next edition.

A BCCI official told “Due diligence for Ahmedabad franchise is still on, once that is done we will let you know”

There is actually ‘no-clarity’ status on Ahmedabad franchise which has delayed for the much awaited IPL Media Rights for a new season.

The IPL Media Rights tender for the cycle 2023-2027 will be released immediately after the appointment of two new IPL teams which is scheduled to be announced on 25th October 2021.

It is estimated that the media rights tender should fetch between 4-5 billion for the BCCI. Some big brands like Disney Star Network and Sony Sports Network will be getting the deals. It is likely that Amazon Prime will be bidding for IPL Media Rights portfolio.
