Edouard Mendy has proven to be the best Premier League signing of the summer so far and is without a doubt an incredible piece of business by Chelsea.
Former Chelsea keeper Petr Cech chose his heir at the club well, and the stats are there to prove it. Interestingly, both Cech and Mendy were former Rennes players who signed for Chelsea.
Cech went on to be an absolute legend at the club and had a big part to play in their 2012 Champions League victory.
While not at the same level, Edouard Mendy has completely transformed the Chelsea defence since his arrival at the club.
In his 6 appearances between the sticks for the Blues, Mendy has managed to keep an incredible five clean sheets. He is yet to concede a goal in the Premier League and the Champions League.
The only player to score against him is Erik Lamela of Tottenham, whose late equaliser eventually proved fatal for Chelsea’s hopes of winning the EFL Cup.
With his latest appearance against Burnley in Chelsea’s 3-0 away victory, Mendy took an early step towards nearing that of his teammate, as he became the first Chelsea keeper since 2004 to keep three consecutive clean sheets in his first three games in the Premier League.
The record was previously held by Petr Cech alone but now belongs to both the Rennes and Chelsea shot-stoppers. Mendy will have a great chance at making the record his own as Chelsea host Sheffield United next weekend.
Considering the slump in form that the Blades have had since the beginning of the 20/21 campaign, Chelsea will be hoping to secure another clean sheet in the Prem.
However, Mendy will first play his former club Rennes in midweek. It goes without saying that the affair will be an emotional one for the Senegalese keeper.
