## What Went Wrong?

YouTube confirmed the cause in an official update: “An issue with our recommendations system prevented videos from appearing across surfaces on YouTube (including the homepage, the YouTube app, YouTube Music and YouTube Kids).” [Letterboxd](https://letterboxd.com/film/psycho-killer-2026/)

Simply put, a core recommendations engine failure triggered a cascading breakdown — wiping out homepages, Shorts feeds, and subscription pages all at once. Direct video links via embeds were largely unaffected during the chaos.

## How Big Was the YouTube Outage?

Massive. More than 900,000 users reported issues with YouTube at the peak of the disruption, according to DownDetector. [Movie Insider](https://www.movieinsider.com/m8191/psycho-killer) Some users reported being kicked off mid-video and even signed out of their YouTube accounts on mobile apps. Geographically, the US West Coast — especially San Francisco and Los Angeles — bore the brunt, while New York led reports on the East Coast. The outage also spread globally, hitting users in India, the UK, and Canada.

## How Was It Fixed?

YouTube resolved the issue nearly two hours after it began, with the platform posting on X: “Aaaand we’re back!! This issue has been fixed across YouTube. Thanks for all the reports and for bearing with us while we sorted it out.” [firstshowing](https://www.firstshowing.net/2026/tickets-on-sale-promo-for-psycho-killer-road-trip-horror-thriller-film/)
