When Middle East tensions spike global crude prices — as they have dramatically in recent months — airlines have almost no choice but to pass the burden on to passengers.
According to IndiGo, fuel prices have risen by about 85% in recent months, putting pressure on airline finances and forcing companies to review fare structures. The Iran conflict has restricted access to West Asia airspace, while Indian airlines remain barred from Pakistan’s airspace, forcing longer routes and higher fuel consumption on international flights.
IndiGo Not Alone — Air India Did It First
Earlier, Air India and Air India Express also announced the introduction of a fuel surcharge on flight tickets — a surcharge of ₹399 per ticket on domestic flights came into effect from March 12. Tonboriday IndiGo’s domestic charge of ₹425 is slightly higher, reflecting the airline’s larger network and operational exposure.
