# Yelena, Bucky and John Walker: Why Marvel Keeps Skipping Their Hero Names in Avengers: Doomsday

A fresh *Avengers: Doomsday* poster puts 22 heroes around Doctor Doom, with most labelled by their iconic code names. Mister Fantastic and Professor X get their titles, but three heroes get only their birth names. It’s a small detail with big fan reactions, especially as the film arrives on December 18.

It’s odd, since Kevin Feige said Yelena plays a big part in *Doomsday*. Meanwhile, Shuri is regularly promoted as Black Panther, so the hesitation here stands out.

## Bucky and John Walker: Aliases Lost in the Shuffle

Bucky has two memorable aliases, Winter Soldier and White Wolf, but he mostly goes by his name on screen. That makes some sense, since the Winter Soldier title is tied to the darkest period of his life. The White Wolf name could be a nice middle ground, but Marvel hasn’t pushed it.

John Walker’s case is stranger. Red Guardian keeps his title throughout the promos, while John Walker’s U.S. Agent alias, which he earned after losing the Captain America mantle, usually appears after his birth name, if at all.

## Why Might Marvel Be Doing This?

The likeliest answer is *Thunderbolts*. Those characters were mostly called by their real names in their own film, so Marvel may feel general audiences don’t yet connect them with their code names. Even so, aliases help make characters popular, so many fans argue Marvel should lean in rather than avoid them.
