XMG Apex 15 Max Gaming laptop unveiled with AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU

With their APEX 15 MAX Gaming laptop, XMG has become the first manufacturer to use AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D Desktop CPU. The APEX 15 MAX (E22) desktop replacement laptop is now compatible with AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D thanks to a BIOS update from XMG. This makes the system the first notebook in the world to use AMD’s 3D V-Cache, giving the quick eight-core processor an advantage, especially in games.

The GeForce RTX 3070 or 3060-equipped, freely configurable APEX 15 MAX is currently discounted by 300 euros at XMG partner store bestware.com. Already in May, XMG released a BIOS update for the APEX 15 MAX that made the desktop replacement laptop compatible with a progressively larger range of processors.

The Ryzen 5 5600X, Ryzen 7 5700X, and Ryzen 9 5900X are some of the CPUs that XMG has since then offered. The manufacturer does not officially advocate the Ryzen 9 5950X even though it is also supported and can be configured via bestware.com since the performance benefits that can be obtained depend too heavily on the calibre of individual processors.

The APEX 15 MAX can now be configured with AMD’s fastest gaming CPU, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D with 3D V-cache, thanks to the second major BIOS update to version 1.07.09A01 (which also includes AGESA update to version 1.2.0.7).

It is also possible to upgrade an existing laptop from the E22 model generation with this processor, as it is housed on a B550 mainboard with desktop socket AM4.

XMG demonstrates how the 3D V-cache of the 5800X3D might be advantageous, particularly in gaming applications, based on its own benchmarks. It performs better in CPU-intensive apps than a cheaper Ryzen 7 5700X, which is about 30% faster in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

The measurements are based on an APEX 15 MAX with 64 (2x 32 GB) GB DDR4 3200 RAM and a GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card. In this laptop, processors with a PPT (Package Power Tracking) of up to 88 watts always operate in AMD’s ECO Mode.
