Xiaomi Xring chipset: Xiaomi is pushing for chip independence by assigning 1,000 employees to work on its in-house Xring chipset. The chip is being developed under a separate company, not directly linked to the Xiaomi brand. This strategic move may reduce future trade issues—especially with U.S. authorities—and spark a new wave of Chinese innovation in semiconductors.

Xring: Xiaomi’s Quiet Comeback to Chipmaking

After years of laying low in the chip development race, Xiaomi has re-entered the game with a focused approach. A new division named Xring has been quietly developing a custom System-on-Chip (SoC). This marks a major shift in Xiaomi’s long-term tech strategy.

A former Qualcomm senior director is reportedly leading the team. This highlights Xiaomi’s intent to bring seasoned expertise into its custom chip efforts. A working prototype of the Xring chip appeared earlier this year and is said to be nearly identical to the final version.

Why a Separate Company?

The decision to isolate Xring from Xiaomi appears to be a strategic shield. Given the increasing scrutiny by U.S. authorities on Chinese tech firms—Huawei being a prime example—Xiaomi’s move could be designed to avoid sanctions and maintain access to global chip supply chains, particularly for cutting-edge manufacturing nodes.

This tactic could help sidestep restrictions that have severely limited other Chinese players and allow the company to innovate without attracting unwanted attention from geopolitical watchdogs.

Technical Specs: Focused on Balance

Leaked information suggests that Xiaomi’s first in-house SoC won’t chase headline-grabbing specs but instead aims for real-world performance and efficiency. Built on TSMC’s N4P process, the chip is based on ARM’s v9 architecture and features a 1+3+4 octa-core configuration:

  • 1x Cortex X925 @ 3.2GHz
  • 3x Cortex A725 @ 2.6GHz
  • 4x Cortex A520 @ 2.0GHz

The chipset will also pack an IMG DXT72 GPU clocked at 1.3GHz, reportedly strong enough to rival the Adreno 740 in Snapdragon 8 Gen 2—making it a solid choice for upper mid-range smartphones, possibly debuting with the rumored Xiaomi 15S in 2025.

Xiaomi is also said to be developing its own Image Signal Processor (ISP), while potentially outsourcing the 5G modem and DSP to third-party vendors like MediaTek, Synopsys, or even Huawei, depending on component availability and political factors.

Reducing Dependence, Gaining Control

This shift to in-house silicon reflects a growing trend among top smartphone manufacturers aiming to reduce dependence on Qualcomm and MediaTek. For Xiaomi, controlling its own SoC development provides better hardware-software integration, optimized performance, and supply chain flexibility.

The Xring project could significantly reduce production costs in the long run and help Xiaomi stand out in the increasingly competitive smartphone market.

FAQs
