Previously, Xiaomi was reportedly working on its own chipset but the high cost has led to a pause in development. Yet a fresh rumor claims Xiaomi will be showing off its custom answer as soon as the first half of 2025. If the information is accurate, we should see performance in line with Qualcomm’s last year Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 while relying on TSMC’s older-generation process.

Xiaomi Coming with Custom Chipset

The company has not revealed the actual name of its custom chipset — but according to details shared by @heyitsyogesh, what is known so far about this chip suggests that it will be based on TSMC’s 4nm ‘N4P’ process. So it will already be one generation behind the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and Dimensity 9400.

The chinese phone maker must be using this old process because of its cost and due to the lower quantities that the chip will be produced. On the bright side, it does not make TSMC’s 4nm N4P technology obsolete as found in Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Dimensity 9300 — just that the new SoC should still provide excellent performance and efficiency.

The rumor further indicates that Xiaomi’s in-house chip will have the level of performance its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 rival and integrate a Unisoc-made modem for access to cellular networks. The move represents a wider pattern of breakaway companies creating their own chips to reduce dependence on big players such as Qualcomm and MediaTek.

For Xiaomi, developing its chipset is partly a response to rising costs associated with Snapdragon processors. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to be more expensive than its predecessor, and Qualcomm’s business practices, including potential premium charges for next-gen 5G modems, have likely motivated the chinese company to pursue self-sufficiency.

While Xiaomi’s custom chipset may not completely replace Qualcomm and MediaTek components, it represents a step towards greater independence. Much like Apple’s plans to launch its own 5G modem, the chinese company’s new chipset aims to establish a solid foundation for future advancements.
