Xiaomi is reportedly working on a clamshell design smartphone just like Samsung Galaxy Z Flip the new Motorola Razr. Last year Xiaomi showcased a tri-fold smartphone prototype with its design that never came out officially. Now, according to a new report from ZDNet Korea, citing electronic component industry insiders, Xiaomi is seeking the help of Samsung and LG for OLED displays to help them to build a foldable smartphone-like Samsung and Motorola.
The report mentions that Xiaomi has approached Samsung Display for a clamshell flexible OLED display, the one that is used on the Galaxy Z Flip with an ultra-thin glass OLED panel underneath a layer of plastic. However, Xiaomi has also knocked the doors of LG for the OLED displays for the same reason.
The reports also claim that foldable panels from BOE and CSOT are inferior in quality compared to those from Samsung Display and it could be why Xiaomi hasn’t approached them. Though it is totally insider news and we have no proper evidence for this particular information.
Unfortunately, details regarding the hardware specifications are scarce at the moment. But we do know that the mass production of the foldable smartphone will start in late 2020. We still do not know Xiaomi is getting the OLED panel from which company, but once this is fixed the company will start the production and we can see the device by the end of 2021.
