Lyon are reportedly looking to move on Xherdan Shaqiri only four months after signing him from Liverpool. The report comes from French publication L’Equipe, who state that Lyon want to cut their losses and sell him in the upcoming window.
Shaqiri was signed this summer from Liverpool for £9.5 million, after a rather impressive performance in the Euros for Switzerland.
Why do Lyon want to sell Xherdan Shaqiri?
Shaqiri has made thirteen appearances for Lyon this season, and has only scored one goal for them. The club does not believe that their investment has been worthwhile, and want to get rid of him as a result.
He was a squad player for Liverpool when he was signed by the French club, helping the Merseyside club win the Premier League, Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup titles. He is on a massive £300,000 per week contract, which is a lot of money for the club to pay.
Since they are not getting the appropriate return, they are willing to choose financial stability and better quality for Peter Bosz’s side. Xherdan Shaqiri is 30, and can still provide quality to a line-up on his day. But his time seems to be up at Lyon.
Whether or not any suitors come calling for him in January is what remains to be seen. He has a contract until 2024, and will have to be released on a cut price given his poor form in Ligue 1.
