Xherdan Shaqiri retires from Swiss national team aged 32

Xherdan Shaqiri has officially announced his retirement from the Switzerland national team, after representing his country 125 times.

The former Liverpool and Bayern Munich man was one of the most prominent players on the team, and remains the only player in the nation’s history to have appeared in seven major tournaments from the 2010 FIFA World Cup to the 2024 Euros.

“Seven tournaments, many goals, 14 years with the Swiss national team and unforgettable moments. It’s time to say goodbye to the national team,” Shaqiri wrote on Instagram. “Great memories remain and I say to you all, thank you.”

The veteran has been playing for Chicago Fire in the MLS since 2022, and is now seeing out the final chapter of his career. He was able to help the team make it to the quarter finals of the Euros against all odds before they were eliminated by eventual runners-up England on penalties.

Xherdan Shaqiri joins the likes of Thomas Muller and Toni Kroos to leave international football after the Euros, in what seems like the end of an era.

Which other clubs did Shaqiri play for?

Basel, Lyon, Inter, Stoke City
