Xavi Hernandez has turned down Barcelona’s offer for an immediate contract extension. The manager has been offered a new deal until 2026, but he has not accepted just yet. The plan for him is to see out the current season and win the La Liga title before putting pen to paper to a new deal.
The legendary midfielder returned to the club in November 2021, taking over from Ronald Koeman on the back of a disappointing season. Since then, he has helped them win the Supercopa de Espana and is expected to win the La Liga title in a matter of months.
Xavi Hernandez to renew contract with Barcelona after title win
“I have already thought about a renewal,” Barcelona president Joan Laporta said upon the two-year mark of being re-elected.
“I think we should renew him because he has earned it. He knows the house. He knows Barca. He doesn’t ask us for crazy things [as per transfers]. He perfectly understands the situation of the club.”
Xavi Hernandez’s current deal runs until 2024, as a result there is no rush to tie him down to a new contract just yet. He is committed to the project and the club, and is keen on staying for years to come.
In spite of their crisis off the pitch, and their lack of luck in Europe, Barcelona have dominated domestic competition. They have only conceded nine goals in 26 games, which is unparalleled across the top leagues in Europe. And in a matter of months, their twelve-point lead at the top will become a La Liga title.
