Bayer Leverkusen manager and former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has commented on the possibility of returning to the Santiago Bernabeu as the manager of the club. He has been tipped to return to his former club next summer when Carlo Ancelotti will leave to manage the Brazilian national team.
However, Alonso has insisted that he remains committed to the project at Leverkusen for the current season. His side has started the 23/24 Bundesliga season brilliantly, staying unbeaten in five games with 13 points collected.
Xabi Alonso responds to Real Madrid links with Leverkusen commitment
“Coaching Madrid? It’s September, it’s early days,” Xabi responded to questions about the link to the Real Madrid post. “I remain focused. We started the season well, we want all the players to be focused. That’s why I have to be the first,” Xabi Alonso recently told Marca when asked about returning to the Spanish capital.
“Now I’m here, I’m very happy and what has to come in the future will be seen.
“Normally in soccer when you think in the medium to long term you lose focus of what you have closer and right now, I only think about what we have here.”
However, he isn’t the only man linked with the record Champions League winners. Current Italy manager Luciano Spalletti and Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann remain options for the club even though they have committed to their respective countries until Euro 2024.
