The Spaniard is best known for his playing career, featuring for the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Real Sociedad during his iconic career. After hanging up his boots with Bayern Munich, he turned to management and took charge of Real Madrid’s youth team in 2018, until 2019.

He then managed Real Sociedad B from 2019 to 2022, before being handed his first senior team job with Leverkusen in October. He has been coached by some of the best managers in the game, like Jose Mourinho, Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti and more.

His incredible footballing intelligence has been hailed by the likes of Mourinho himself. And he will be facing his former coach in the semi-finals of the Europa League when they face Roma.
