The World Wide Developers Conference 2023 took place on Monday, 5th June 2023. Apple launched many new things. During the WWDC 2023 keynote, Apple announced the official release of iOS 17, unveiling several exciting features. Here are some highlights:

  1. Enhanced Safety Features: iOS 17 introduces new safety features aimed at providing users with a more secure and private experience.
  2. Built-in Journaling App: A new built-in journaling app is included in iOS 17, allowing users to conveniently document and reflect on their daily experiences.
  3. Nightstand Mode: iOS 17 brings a new nightstand mode, offering improved functionality and customization options for users who utilize their iPhone as a bedside clock.
  4. Redesigned Contact Cards: Contact cards receive a fresh redesign, now featuring bold typography options and the ability to incorporate Memoji. These visually appealing contact cards can be displayed in full-screen on the recipient’s iPhone when you call them.
  5. Improved Auto-Correct and Voice Transcription: iOS 17 enhances the auto-correct and voice transcription capabilities, resulting in more accurate and efficient typing and voice-to-text conversion.
  6. Live Voicemail and Transcription: A new live transcription feature for voicemail allows users to view real-time transcripts of messages left by callers. Users have the option to either continue listening to the message or answer the call, and all processing is performed on the device itself. Additionally, FaceTime now enables users to leave messages for others.
  7. “Hey Siri” Removal: With iOS 17, users will have the option to drop the “hey” from the “Hey Siri” voice command, providing a more streamlined and natural interaction with Siri.

These new features, such as posters for contact cards, live transcription, and improved voicemail and FaceTime capabilities, enhance communication and personalization within the iOS 17 ecosystem.

iOS 17 brings several updates and features to the Messages app and other areas. Here are the details:

  1. Messages Enhancements:
    • Additional Search Filters: Messages now allow users to filter searches with additional terms, making it easier to find specific content within conversations.
    • Jump to Recent Message: A new feature jumps to the most recent message in a conversation, facilitating catching up quickly.
    • Voice Message Transcriptions: Similar to the Pixel 7 series, iOS 17 introduces voice message transcriptions, converting spoken messages into written text.
    • Check In Feature: The Check In feature enables users to share their live location and status with someone else. It can automatically send a message to a friend when you’ve arrived home and share important phone details like battery and cell service status.
  2. Sticker Overhaul:
    • More Customization: Stickers receive an overhaul, allowing users to add any emoji or photo cutout as a “sticker” in iMessages or system-wide.
    • Animated Stickers: Live photos can be transformed into animated stickers, adding liveliness to conversations.
    • Sticker Effects: Users can now apply effects to stickers, enhancing their visual appeal.
  3. AirDrop Improvements:
    • NameDrop: AirDrop now supports the sending of contact information, aptly named NameDrop. This feature allows the easy sharing of selected email addresses, phone numbers, and posters by bringing two iPhones near each other. It also works between an iPhone and an Apple Watch.
    • Enhanced File Sharing: AirDrop now enables sharing of photos, and even if the file is large, users can move out of range while the download continues.
  4. Keyboard Updates:
    • Autocorrect Enhancements: iOS 17 introduces a new language model for improved autocorrect accuracy. It also offers a convenient shortcut to revert to the original word if necessary.
    • In-line Predictive Typing: Users can benefit from in-line predictive typing, providing suggestions as they type.
    • Sentence-Level Autocorrections: Autocorrections now extend to sentence-level, helping correct grammatical mistakes.
    • Personalized Dictionary: The keyboard learns and recognizes frequently used words, including favorite cuss words.
  5. Journal App:
    • Automatic Suggestions: The Journal app automatically suggests moments for users to commemorate in a journal entry.
    • Multimedia Entries: Entries can include photos, music, and activities, allowing for a rich and personalized journaling experience.
    • Reminders and End-to-End Encryption: Users can schedule reminders to start writing journal entries, and the app ensures end-to-end encryption for privacy.

These updates and new features in iOS 17 aim to enhance messaging, personalization, file sharing, keyboard functionality, and journaling capabilities for an improved user experience.

iOS 17: StandBy

Introducing StandBy, a new charging mode in iOS 17 that transforms the screen into a dynamic status display featuring the date and time. When your phone is in landscape mode while charging, StandBy automatically activates and showcases information from Live Activities, widgets, and smart stacks. Additionally, you can swipe to the right to view some of your highlighted photos, adding a personal touch to the charging experience. Customizable clockfaces provide further options for personalization. To ensure uninterrupted sleep, the display shifts to a soothing red tone at night, preventing any disruption.

In iOS 17, Siri receives enhancements as well. Users can now drop the “hey” from “Hey Siri,” making interactions with Siri feel more natural and effortless. Siri also gains the ability to recognize and process back-to-back commands, further streamlining the voice assistant experience. Moreover, Siri now presents visual results directly in StandBy mode, making it easier to access information at a glance.
