[King Oyo](https://www.instagram.com/p/DcluR43iH98/) Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the traditional ruler of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom who was recognised as the world’s youngest reigning monarch, has died at the age of 34.

The king’s death was announced by Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who described the loss as immeasurable for the royal family and the people of Tooro. The kingdom has not revealed the cause of death. However, Ugandan media reports said Oyo had been critically ill and was receiving medical treatment in the United States.

Oyo became king in 1995 when he was only three years old, following the death of his father. Because he was a child, a regency was established, with his mother, the Queen Mother, among those involved in overseeing the kingdom until he reached adulthood.

## King Oyo: Overview

In 2010, at the age of 18, Oyo was formally crowned, marking the beginning of his official reign as an adult monarch.

The Guinness World Records recognised him as the world’s youngest reigning monarch. Although Uganda is a republic governed by an elected president and parliament, the country continues to have several traditional kingdoms. These institutions no longer hold formal political authority but remain deeply important to Uganda’s cultural and social identity.

The Tooro Kingdom, founded in the early 19th Century, is one of the country’s prominent traditional institutions. Oyo was its 13th monarch and was regarded as a respected figure among his people.

During his reign, [King Oyo](https://www.technosports.co.in)supported several social causes, including youth empowerment, education, environmental conservation and HIV/AIDS awareness. He also became a prominent cultural figure beyond the borders of Tooro.

One memorable moment from his childhood came in 2001, when nine-year-old Oyo welcomed then-Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to Tooro alongside Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.

Tributes have poured in following his death. Uganda’s Buganda Kingdom expressed solidarity with the people of Tooro, while the Rwenzururu Kingdom also sent condolences to the royal family and mourners.

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations paid tribute to Oyo as a supporter of the sport and announced a moment of silence before matches until September 4 in memory of his contribution and passion for football.

Government minister Margaret Muhanga described the atmosphere in Tooro as deeply sombre, saying the king had died while still at the prime of his life. She also announced plans to plant one million trees in his honour during the mourning period.

Ugandan musician Juliana Kanyomozi called his death a “very dark day for Tooro”, while musician-turned-politician Bobi Wine also offered condolences.

Although King Oyo never officially married, the Tooro Kingdom says the continuity of the Crown is assured. According to Prime Minister Akiiki, Oyo leaves behind a prince who is expected to become his heir. The prince’s identity will be formally announced according to Tooro traditions.

For a kingdom that watched Oyo grow from a three-year-old child monarch into an influential cultural leader, his death marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Tooro’s modern history.
