World NGO Day
On World NGO Day, we honor the global contributions made by non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Every year on February 27, it is observed. The day was formally suggested, acknowledged, and recognized in 2010 and 2012. According to the event’s official website, the United Nations, the European Union, and other international organizations observed World NGO Day for the first time in 2014.
The website went on to say that Marcis Skadmanis, a Latvian-British philanthropist, is the creator of it.
In order to address global issues, promote sustainable development, and defend human rights, NGOs are essential.
The World NGO Day: History
On April 17, 2010, twelve nations who are members of the Baltic Sea NGO Forum formally proposed and acknowledged it in Vilnius, Lithuania. Belarus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Norway, and Sweden were the members of the Baltic Sea NGO Forum.
The Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs sponsored the first-ever World NGO Day event on February 27, 2014, in Helsinki, Finland.
World NGO Day: Importance
The purpose of the day is to honor non-governmental organizations’ contributions to many sectors, social justice advocacy, and humanitarian relief activities.
NGOs operate as watchdogs, making businesses and governments responsible for their deeds. They bring injustices to light, create awareness of urgent concerns, and galvanize communities to demand change through advocacy, research, and public awareness campaigns.
The World NGO Day theme
The overarching idea of World NGO Day is to Honour, Celebrate, and Foster Collaboration with the numerous NGOs across the globe and their supporters who make year-round contributions to society.
On World NGO Day, we get the chance to recognise the creativity and diversity of the industry. NGOs come in a variety of forms and dimensions, from local, grassroots groups to enormous, international corporations. Every individual contributes their distinct methodology, proficiency, and viewpoint, enhancing the group’s endeavours for constructive societal transformation.
It serves as a means of encouraging people to get more involved in the NGO sector and fostering a stronger mutually beneficial relationship between NGOs and the public and commercial sectors.
