Leeds United agreed a deal with Swiss Super League champions FC Zurich for Wilfried Gnonto on deadline day. The striker is the ninth signing for Jesse Marsch as he continues to lead the club in the post-Marcelo Bielsa era.
The 18-year-old has already earned four caps for the Italian national team. He became their youngest goalscorer ever, following his strike against Germany in June. The youngster was previously a part of the Inter Milan academy, where he spent eight years before moving to Switzerland in 2020.
Wilfried Gnonto to join Leeds United
Gnonto has made 74 appearances for Zurich and has been quite impressive during his time at the club. And this eventually led to Roberto Mancini calling him up to the national team for the summer.
Leeds United will be paying Zurich a sum worth €4.5 million plus add-ons for the player. They have also included a sell-on clause in his contract, which means that the Swiss club will be entitled to a percentage of any future sale.
The medical assessment and work permit has already been sorted and now, the player will be wearing the number 29 shirt at his new club. Wilfried Gnonto was originally a target for the January transfer window. But, the Yorkshire club chose to bring it forward on deadline day, and got it over the line in time.
