Why RB Leipzig did not sell Dani Olmo to Barcelona this summer?

Barcelona made an extremely late bid for La Masia graduate and RB Leipzig forward Dani Olmo on deadline day, August 31. The deal was rejected by Leipzig since they would have no time to replace the Spain international.

Olmo was not the problem since he had accepted the terms offered by his former club. However, Leipzig did not want to sell him for a low amount and knew that they could get a decent fee for him.

Antoine Griezmann left Barcelona to rejoin Atletico Madrid on deadline day, and Olmo was being targeted as the replacement for the France international. However, Olmo ended up staying at the club, and realised that Leipzig were not in a position to negotiate with the La Liga outfit at the time. He, too, commented that everything surrounding the move happened too late and too fast.

Manchester United, Juventus and Bayern Munich all maintain an interest in the player. But, Barcelona are willing to offer Leipzig €70 million for Dani Olmo. The transfer could happen in the January window, and then, the Bundesliga club will be able to sign a suitable replacement as well.

However, considering the business model of Leipzig, they will only let Olmo leave if Barcelona or another big club comes calling. Moreover, they will surely try to negotiate a big amount and would only agree to the transfer on their own terms.

Barcelona ended up signing Luuk De Jong from Sevilla on the final day as the replacement for Griezmann, and now have a balanced squad to challenge for trophies with.
