Why new AMD Ryzen 4000 mobile processors are best when it comes to content creation?

This year AMD has changed the game for laptops with its revolutionary 7nm based Zen 2 APUs, be it gaming or daily task, these processors are real showstoppers. But did you actually know how these APUs perform in content creation? AMD has taken the chance to explain how its collaboration with Adobe has helped tune them to optimize hardware for AMD Ryzen 4000 processors.

Content creator across the globe are facing problems in this Coronavirus pandemic but they have to get their jobs done and usually a laptop is a great option for most out there due to its portability. But most laptops cannot deliver the performance you want out of it, editing videos at 4K is not a matter of joke and that requires tremendous horsepower.

Until now getting a professional job done on a mid-range laptop was a joke, crappier CPUs were flooding the market, people had to spend a lot to buy a decent laptop for getting the work done. Times change, things too, AMD’s Ryzen mobile chips brought some real improvements but until last-gen, it still locked to 4 cores and 8 threads, still good for heavy workloads but this year’s 6-core and 8-core options from AMD has changed the game.

Many laptop vendors are switching to AMD and making cost efficient laptops like we see from HP, Lenovo, ASUS and others, while beefier gaming laptops from MSI, ASUS, Dell and HP are also stealing the show. Both the Ryzen 4000U and Ryzen 4000H mobile processor lineups are great for video editing and rendering tasks, while the 15W TDP delivers superior battery life, on the other hand, the 45W TDP options gives insane performance on mobile.

AMD in its blog has shared some insights into their new optimizations made in collaboration with Adobe and what kind of results its mobile processors have been able to achieve:

Adobe Premiere Pro gets AMD GPU Hardware-Accelerated Video Encoding Support

Tuning the software with your hardware is very important in any professional application because if the software cannot utilize your hardware power, it doesn’t make sense at all of buying a high-end laptop. As AMD points out, video editing applications like Premiere Pro have long been able to utilize the power of your GPU like Adobe’s Mercury Playback Engine uses OpenCL with AMD graphics cards to accelerate tasks like rendering video effects.

Now the 14.2 update to Premiere Pro has hardware-accelerated encoding support for the H.264 and HEVC formats for AMD GPUs on Windows. This will help use your graphics card while exporting your video, which is indeed time-consuming. The update uses AMD AMF (Advanced Media Framework) multimedia processing technology to speed up video encoding on systems with any AMD GPU.

To gain the advantage of this you won’t essentially require a discrete Radeon RX GPU but also any Ryzen U-Series mobile processor can take advantage of this using the integrated Vega iGPU. So, ultrathin AMD powered laptops will also be able to deliver faster video exports in Premiere Pro but having a powerful AMD Ryzen H-Series mobile processor with a discrete AMD Radeon RX graphics card significantly can take advantage of this.

“Close collaboration with hardware vendors like AMD enables the optimization of our applications for next-generation CPU and GPU technologies,” said Sue Skidmore, head of partner relations for the Adobe video team. “We’re seeing terrific progress across the board, which directly benefits our users. Thanks to the ongoing efforts of engineering teams on both sides, we will continue to make performance gains for video and animation production workflows, wherever our users are working.”

Performance Gains

AMD was also kind enough to show how its new Ryzen 4000 mobile processors perform during video editing and rendering. Both the Ryzen 4000U mobile processors with integrated Radeon Vega graphics and Ryzen 4000H mobile processors with discrete AMD Radeon RX 5000 Series Graphics for laptops perform.

With AMD GPU-accelerated video encoding enabled in Adobe Premiere Pro 14.2 and higher helps AMD Ryzen 4000U powered laptops to export 4K content up to 29% faster.

The 14-inch Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 or named as Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 7 in North America was tested with AMD Ryzen 7 4800U, was able to export a 4-minute extremely high-quality Apple ProRes 4444 4K 60p QuickTime video clip to the Premiere Pro H.264 4K YouTube preset in 12:20 minutes versus the 17:22 minutes it took when exporting with just the CPU.

Even the more budget Ryzen 5 4500U on an HP ENVY x360 13z convertible laptop too can perform very well in professional workloads as AMD shows is 25% faster and the HP ENVY x360 15z convertible laptop with an AMD Ryzen 7 4700U seems 26% faster.

AMD also tested the recent Dell G5 15 SE that features more powerful AMD Ryzen 4000H gaming processors along with Radeon RX 5600M graphics. Using the Premiere Pro 14.2 (and higher) GPU hardware-accelerated encoding support the laptop exports the same 4-minute Apple ProRes 4444 4K 60p QuickTime video clip to the H.264 4K YouTube preset in 5:16 minutes, which is up to 43% faster than software-only (CPU) accelerated video encoding.

The new MSI Bravo 17 with the AMD Ryzen 7 4800H & AMD Radeon RX 5500M graphics can export to the H.264 4K YouTube preset in 6:06 minutes makes it 35% faster than encoding without GPU-acceleration on the AMD Ryzen 7 4800H alone.

Obviously, these are some healthy figures these new AMD Ryzen 4000 powered laptops have been able to achieve that will indeed help content creators, video editors to edit and render videos on the go using Adobe Premiere Pro. The portable AMD Ryzen 4000U powered laptops still gets the job done at respectable time frame without sacrificing the portability and comfort of using them while the AMD Ryzen 4000H and Radeon RX graphics powered laptops deliver desktop-like performance.
