Manchester United have long set their sights on bolstering their attack, and Bryan Mbeumo has emerged as a key target. The Red Devils’ summer-long pursuit of the Brentford forward, however, has become an agonizingly drawn-out process, frustrating both fans and the player himself. Despite mutual interest and early talks, a deal remains elusive. But why exactly is Manchester United’s approach for Bryan Mbeumo taking so long?

United Want Mbeumo — But On Their Terms

Manchester United’s interest in Bryan Mbeumo is not new. The club identified the Cameroon international as a priority signing weeks before the summer window even opened. Mbeumo reportedly expressed his desire to join United as early as June, favoring the Premier League giants over other suitors.

Yet, it’s mid-July, and Mbeumo remains a Brentford player.

The holdup? Structure. Not the intent, not the valuation, but the financial packaging of the transfer.

Brentford Stand Firm After Summer Exodus

Brentford’s reluctance to greenlight the deal isn’t rooted in Mbeumo’s valuation — United’s latest offer stands at a respectable £62.5 million ($85.7 million), including £55 million ($75.5 million) guaranteed and £7.5 million ($10.3 million) in add-ons. Instead, the west London outfit are deeply concerned about how and when they receive the funds.

Having already parted ways with their manager (Thomas Frank to Spurs), captain (Christian Nørgaard to Arsenal), and goalkeeper (Mark Flekken to Leverkusen), Brentford are understandably hesitant to let go of another cornerstone of their setup — especially without firm upfront guarantees.

They’ve also raised nearly £30 million ($40.5 million) this summer alone, so financial urgency isn’t a pressing issue. If Tottenham formalize their interest in Yoane Wissa, losing Mbeumo too could spell trouble for squad stability.

What’s Causing the Delay?

Football insider Fabrizio Romano has reported that negotiations have reached a stalemate due to disagreements over the “easy and difficult add-ons” in the proposed deal. These conditional bonuses — often tied to appearances, goals, or Champions League qualification — are where United and Brentford diverge.

While United are optimistic, they have yet to make a breakthrough. Brentford, meanwhile, are holding firm, demanding more guaranteed cash rather than speculative bonuses. The club knows Mbeumo will be their most expensive sale ever, potentially exceeding the £40 million ($53 million) they received for Ivan Toney’s move to Al Ahli in 2023.

Mbeumo Growing Frustrated

Understandably, the prolonged saga has begun to test Mbeumo’s patience. With pre-season underway and uncertainty swirling around his future, the 25-year-old is eager for clarity. He had hoped to link up with United early and integrate into the squad under Erik ten Hag, but now finds himself in limbo.

If this delay continues, it risks souring relations between the player and his current club — and potentially between United and Brentford, too.

Manchester United must now decide: meet Brentford’s upfront demands or risk losing their primary forward target. With limited time and plenty of competition in the transfer market, swift resolution is essential.

Brentford, meanwhile, hold the cards. They don’t need to sell — and unless United present a compelling structure soon, Mbeumo’s move to Old Trafford may remain stuck in neutral.
