What’s going wrong with Liverpool?

Liverpool to suffer £50 million loss if they miss out on Champions League

Chelsea managed to hand Liverpool their fifth consecutive loss at Anfield, which is the most in the history of the club. The Blues won 1-0 against the reigning champions with Mason Mount being the only name on the scoresheet for Chelsea.

An early tap-in goal from Timo Werner was ruled out for a marginal offside, but the German forward impressed throughout the game. The only drawback from his game is a certain unlucky spell that doesn’t seem to leave the player whatsoever. However, it was a good performance from Werner in totality with the former Leipzig man attempting a fair share of shots on goal.

The goal from Mason Mount came from him being 1on1 with Fabinho at the edge of the penalty area. And that is where the tendencies of the Brazilian as a midfielder showed. Mount was simply too fast for the Liverpool man, and he curled the ball between Ozan Kabak and Fabinho to beat Alisson at the lower right corner of the goal to put the Blues ahead.

Most of Liverpool’s traditional starting XI were in the lineup, minus the likes of Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez who are still out injured. However, the centre-back position remains a problem due to the unbelievable work rate offered by both Van Dijk and Gomez in holding up the high line for Liverpool and helping the full-backs play their natural game high up the flanks.

This was exploited thoroughly by Thomas Tuchel, with the visitors often resorting to long balls and dashing runs from the forwards to build their attack from a deep turnover.

With the centre-backs no closer to a return, Liverpool will have to find a way to maintain defensive solidarity against tougher opposition and find their spark in attack again to potentially outscore their opponents to get the much needed points for Champions League football next season.
