What is Timed Out in Cricket? Angelo Mathews Becomes the First Batsman to be Timed Out in International Cricket History

What is Timed Out in Cricket? Angelo Mathews Controversy

Cricket is a sport known for its thrilling drama and excitement, and in a recent showdown between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, history was made. Angelo Mathews, a prominent Sri Lankan all-rounder, became the first cricketer to be dismissed through a ‘time out’ in international cricket. This remarkable incident occurred due to an MCC rule, requiring a new batter to be ready to face a delivery within two minutes of the previous batter’s dismissal or retirement.

Let’s uncover what happened to Angelo Mathews’ unique ‘timed out’ dismissal, the events leading up to it, and the ensuing controversy. This incident added a new layer of intrigue to the sport, highlighting the importance of adhering to cricket’s rules and regulations.

Angelo Mathews’ Timed Out Dismissal

The dramatic turn of events began when Angelo Mathews was set to take the crease following Sadeera Samarawickrama’s dismissal. However, what should have been a routine transition turned into a prolonged delay. Mathews appeared to be in no hurry as he leisurely made his way to the crease. Adding to the confusion, he brought the wrong helmet with him and had to call for a substitute to fetch a replacement.

As minutes passed, the Bangladesh team grew increasingly impatient with Mathews’ delay. Shakib al Hasan, the Bangladesh skipper, decided to take matters into his own hands and appealed to the umpires, drawing attention to Mathews’ extended preparation time.

The Umpires’ Decision

The appeal triggered a lengthy and intense conversation between the umpires, Mathews, and Shakib. Angelo Mathews, clearly bewildered by the turn of events, made valiant efforts to reason with both Shakib and the umpires, pleading his case. However, the final decision rested with Shakib al Hasan.

In a pivotal moment, Shakib had the power to withdraw his appeal, sparing Mathews and allowing him to continue his innings. However, the Bangladesh skipper chose to uphold the appeal, leading to Mathews’ dismissal. This decision made Angelo the first cricketer in international cricket history to be timed out.

The MCC Rule

The ‘time out’ dismissal was executed following the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) rule, specifically rule 40.1.1. This rule stipulates that after the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must be ready to face the ball within two minutes, unless ‘Time’ has been called.

If the incoming batter fails to meet this requirement, they are declared ‘Timed Out.’ This rule emphasizes the importance of maintaining the pace of the game and ensuring that play progresses smoothly and fairly.

Angelo Mathews’ ‘time out’ dismissal will be remembered as a unique and historic moment in cricket. While it may have been an unwanted record for Mathews, it adds to the rich tapestry of cricketing history, showcasing the sport’s capacity to surprise and captivate its fans.

This incident serves as a reminder that cricket is not just about boundaries and sixes but also about adhering to the rules that govern it. Angelo may have been the first, but he is unlikely to be the last player to face such an unusual dismissal.

Also, later in the second inning of the match between Srilanka and Bangladesh Angelo Mathews showed his wrist (as a sign of watch) to Bangladesh’s captain Shakib Al Hasan after taking his wicket.
