Paris Saint-Germain have announced the signing of Gini Wijnaldum as a free agent. The player will officially become a Parisian once his contract expires with Liverpool at the end of the month.

The player is set to earn about €9.5 million per season, and has signed a three-year deal with the French club. The salary offered by PSG is double the figure that Barcelona were offering the player, and he changed his mind about the transfer at the last minute.

Although Wijnaldum had a pre-contract agreement with Barcelona regarding a transfer this summer, he had not signed the contract. And now, PSG have swooped in with a better offer than the Catalonians and have made quick work of the negotiations with the Dutch international.

So, what does this mean for PSG’s midfield? They have been searching for options in midfield over the last few years, and Wijnaldum’s profile is exactly what they were looking for. The Dutch international has the ability to create plays and is also able to provide some form of cover defensively.

He will surely be partnered alongside Marco Verratti under Mauricio Pochettino and will provide another offensive dimension to the team. He has the ability to cycle possession and played over 1700 passes in the 20/21 season for Liverpool. Wijnaldum also played 46 accurate through balls throughout the season and made 198 recoveries.

In essence, PSG now have the missing link to their midfield since Wijnaldum brings in both the offensive element and can also provide defensive cover for the backline.
