West Ham United have confirmed the loan signing of PSG goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, with the option to buy at the end of the loan deal.
The player spent 19/20 with Fulham in the Premier League, and now returns to London with the Hammers. West Ham had been targeting the goalkeeper for a while, and now have their man to provide competition to their first choice between the sticks, Lukasz Fabianski.
“The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world, so I really enjoyed it last season,” said Areola.”London is a great place to live and to work as well. It was tough for me and for the team, but I enjoyed playing in the Premier League.
“West Ham had a big season last year. We have a really good squad. I watched games last season so I know the potential and the talent in this squad, so I can’t wait to start.”
David Moyes also expressed his joy about the arrival of the 28-year-old, saying: “Alphonse is an experienced and talented goalkeeper who has played at the highest level and performed very well in the Premier League last season.
“We have been aware of his qualities for a long time and we have no doubt he will be another player and character who will enhance our squad.”
Areola has been with PSG since 2010, and was previously on loan with Real Madrid before moving to Fulham. He now returns to European football with West Ham participating in the Europa League.
